The ceramic torch was created in Raku, the Japanese method of open air firing, to create the lustrous surfaces of the torch, the focal point of the sculpture. A range of plastics and metals including copper, aluminium, brass and tinplate steel were used (reflecting gold, silver and bronze) with recycled materials used where possible. Images were engraved and etched onto the surfaces, reflecting the location and recollections created by residents of Rochford District about their communities, and their sense of place. The images wrap around the torch, embracing the Olympic celebrations.
